Formula 1: Interview With McLaren’s Martin Whitmarsh

Posted in : Formula One Gossips

Formula 1: Interview With McLaren’s Martin WhitmarshMartin Whitmarsh: I think we all know there are no team orders in the sport, so I think the right thing for a racing driver is to go there and win. I’d be disappointed if Jenson wasn’t going there trying to win. I think the championship for Jenson in particular is tough, but if he was telling me that he’d given up, then I would be deeply disappointed.

So I think the right thing is that if he’s getting his car in front of all of our competitors, that’s the absolute right target and we’ll see what happens in the course of the weekend. There’s a good relationship between the two drivers. I’m sure they’re going to co-operate with each other. I think Jenson is a remarkably composed, mature, thinking driver, and he should go there with the attitude of trying and seeking to win the race. During the course of the weekend, I’m sure he’ll do everything he can to fulfil the ambitions of the team.

“We have shared the design with some of the Formula One teams to put it into their simulators,” Hughes told Formula1.com, “and they have come back with some recommendations on how to modify it to make it a little more exciting.

Kimi Raikkonen Brushes Off Future Formula 1 Speculation

Posted in : Formula One Gossips

(added last year!)

The former world champion quit the sport at the end of the 2008 season to go into the World Rally Championship, but was reportedly looking to return to Formula 1 next year. Renault claim the Finnish driver held talks with the team over a possible drive, although Raikkonen insists that they only used his name for ‘marketing purposes’. Now his manager Steve Robertson has confirmed that the former Ferrari driver will remain in the WRC. Setanta Sports Ireland.

“Yes, we have been holding pembiaraan with several F1 teams. Apart from that, I can not give anymore details, “he said. “We do not want to return to F1. Raikkonen still focus on the rally, “said Robertson, on Friday. Having bluntly rebutted Renault’s advances – and even accused the Enstone-based outfit of seeking to use his name for ‘their marketing’ when he had ‘never seriously considered’ driving for them – Raikkonen has appeared increasingly intent on sticking with rallying, and Citroën competition boss Olivier Quesnel revealed only this week that ‘negotiations are progressing well for Kimi to stay in the Citroën Junior Team’ next year.

No return to F1 for Raikkonen

Posted in : Formula One Gossips

(added last year!)

Kimi Räikkönen's manager says that the Finn will not be returning to F1 in 2011 as previously rumoured. It had been widely reported earlier this year that Räikkönen's manager had been holding talks with the Renault Formula One team. Räikkönen currently competes in the World Rally Championship with sister company Citroën. Asked whether the former world champion had permanently shelved plans to return to F1, Robertson said on Finnish television channel MTV3: "Never say never, but right now our eye is not on F1. We are no longer looking out for opportunities for Formula One. Kimi seems to be focused on rallying at the moment."

It is unsure whether Räikkönen will continue with the Citroen Junior Team in 2011. "We are having discussions with several different teams and I cannot say more," said Robertson. "Nothing's been decided yet. We'll let you know when there is something to say. At the moment nothing has been signed. We're talking to several teams."

The best Formula One corners

Posted in : Formula One Gossips

(added last year!)

The best Formula One cornersCorners matter. Yes, straight-line speed is important, but ultimately it is how quickly a car and driver can corner that dictates that all-important lap time. But what makes a great corner? It is, of course, a very subjective issue. The new Korea International Circuit threw up a few at the weekend, but it is a little too soon to dub them ‘classics’. For those, most drivers will refer you to the likes of Spa-Francorchamps, Suzuka and Istanbul Park…

Japanese Grand Prix - Suzuka’s 130R
The list had to include at least one corner from Suzuka, the famous figure-of-eight track that many drivers cite as their favourite on the calendar, and narrowing it down to the high-speed 130R proved tough, with the famous Spoon Curve a very close second. Named after the corner’s radius, the 130R is one of the fastest in Formula One racing. Although modifications made in 2003 mean taking it at full throttle is not quite the challenge it once was, jinking left in seventh gear at speeds in excess of 310 km/h remains a supreme test of both car and driver, with a lateral cornering force of up to 6G. 130R’s unforgiving nature is why the drivers love it. Precision is key, even when taken at relatively low speed, as Lucas di Grassi found to his cost recently when he trashed his Virgin there on his out-lap to the grid. “130R is one of the fastest corners in Formula One and you really have to think about how you approach it.” McLaren’s Jenson Button.

Italian Grand Prix - Monza’s Parabolica
Monza may be known as the ‘temple of speed’, but sprinkled amongst its epically long straights are some equally legendary corners - including the majestic Parabolica. It’s the track’s final turn and at 180 degrees, cars can experience apex speeds in excess of 200km/h and lateral acceleration for close to 450 metres. It leads onto Monza’s 1.3-km main straight, so it’s paramount for drivers to make a good exit in order to maximise their top speed before they brake for Turn One, the Rettifilo chicane, which is the best spot on the circuit for overtaking. The challenge of Parabolica is to brake as late as possible but then also get back on the power before the apex. Guaranteed to sort the men from the boys. “Parabolica, is quite special. It's a difficult one to get right. You can always go faster there than you actually do.” 1997 world champion, Jacques Villeneuve.
