Mark Webber might be the second driver on the Red Bull team, but he certainly did not offer up a second-rate performance at the Formula One British Grand Prix on Sunday.

“Very special victory for me,” Webber told  “I have won here in Formula Ford, Formula 3000, sports cars and now Formula One.

So it has been a very special track to me. To get the victory for me in Formula One in the company of these guys is something which will be a highlight.

“Lewis [Hamilton] drove a sensational race. We pushed each other as hard as we could. I think it is fair to say I had a better car here today, I used it to the maximum and managed to pull away. We controlled it very well and took care of business.”Webber made a great start from second place, out-dragged his teammate Sebastian Vettel into the first turn, and drove away from the field twice—once at the start, and then again after a safety car on lap 28.

After Lewis Hamilton punctured Sebastian Vettel’s tire while trying to pass on lap one, the British driver tried to challenge Webber, but the Red Bull was just too fast. Hamilton finished a very popular second, but the McLaren driver never really had a chance to fight for the win in front of his home crowd.

“The Red Bull was about four -or five-tenths a lap faster than our car, so it was very difficult to stay close to him. Still, the most important thing is that we scored a lot of world championship points once again, so this is another great race result for us.

”Hamilton was the only driver who could even approach Webber; the rest of the pack had fallen nearly half-a-minute behind by the time a safety car on lap 28 closed up the field. Even so, within five laps the gap to third was back up to 12 seconds and up to 20 seconds five laps after that. No one could touch Webber’s Red Bull.
